Liberal "Victory"

While not a Senate race, the special election in Ohio's second congressional district is worthy of some attention because of the dramatic shift that it shows in American politics. Liberals have actually redefined victory by claiming that every near-miss is a win. First it was the Scream, er, Dean campaign when People Powered Howard claimed victory by mobilizing a tremendous youth movement that just had one minor detail go wrong: they didn't show up at the polls. Then MoveOn.org called the last win a victory because of their grassroots mobilization. Now, over at Swing State, liberals are giddy over yet another near miss. Ohio 2 is a Republican stronghold. Last year's reelection of Rob Portman was a cake walk. Today's race was closer, but again, Democrats lost.

This is a dramatic shift in American politics. Just over a decade ago, Democrats controlled both the White House and Congress. Republicans were a permanent minority. Then came 1994 when the nation writ large rejected the leftwing extremism promoted by the establishment, including the first First Lady who actually thought that she was an elected official. While we have not yet completed our revolution, as Sen. Frist's betrayal illustrates, it is clear from the 2004 election that Americans want to continue to elect officials who believe in personal responsibility, family values, economic liberty, and a strong national defense. So dramatic is this shift that liberals no longer define "victory" as actually winning seats, but rather define it as not getting blown out. While Senator Frist's comments were discouraging, conservatives can take heart in just how dire the straights of modern day liberals are. With liberals willing to accept the election of conservatives as "victory", we can rest assured that we will be able to continue the restoration of values that brought about the revolution of 1994 in the first place.

Anonymous: " shouldn't there be like a cricket chirping MP3 playing when you visit here?"

I have more respect for someone who goes through the trouble of putting together a blog than someone else who's too lazy to think of a handle to post comments.

SI Conservative:

Keep up the good work.

2005. 52% to 48%
2004. 72% to 28%
2002. 74% to 26%
2000. 74% to 23%
1998. 76% to 24%

A true victory indeed...

"Americans want to continue to elect officials who believe in personal responsibility, family values, economic liberty, and a strong national defense."

You're absolutely correct on this score. However, it's important to note that W and his coterie are particularly weak on all points of the above. They have massive spin (ie, lie) machines that try to turn pyrite into gold, but the truth is slowly showing through the cracks.

Personal responsibility? How about firing anyone involved in the Plame leak? What kind of example of responsibility does that set, to go back on your word like that?

Family values? How does supporting CAFTA and further export of American jobs support the family? All it does is place further economic strains on those who really don't need them.

Same holds true for economic freedom-- the current taxing policies favor the very rich, not anyone else. These policies have been described as, at best, 'misting down economics', and do nothing to support individual and family needs.

As for a strong national defence, our defence right now seems to be peppered entirely with lies and delusion. IEDs of increasing power and magnitude (and where did those explosives come from? Al Qaqaa, anyone?) continue to blow up, the opposition continues to undermine whatever peace efforts we have in the region, and we show no signs of bringing violence to a halt. North Korea, meanwhile, is becoming an increasing threat, China's move to increase the value of the yuan threatens to tank or economy-- the list goes on.

In other words, candidates toeing the current republican party line actually do none of the things that they say they are going to do.

When this election is called a victory, it's not in the sense of actually winning, because democrats knew from the beginning that they would lose. Winning wasn't in the cards for them. They wanted to use this race as a way to see what could work in a region that has vehemently supported Bush and the GOP for the last 7 years, and always gone Republican for the last 40 years. That the lead was chipped down to 4% from 44% means that democrat tactics are working, that those areas that are emphatically for all of the things you mention are slowly realizing that W and his ilk aren't the ones who can actually provide it.

Right now, there's a little boy on the sideliness yelling that the emporer has no clothes. This election is the first wave of people slowly coming to realize that the little boy is right.

And the best counterargument they have is "you're anonymous, so I don't respect you."

-Anonymous (just for spite)
