Screw Em

Not that any tears will be shed over this, but running this blog isn't worth it any more. If 55 seats don't constitute a majority, nothing does. Senators Graham and DeWine in particular stabbed conservatives in the back. The WH and Majority Leader showed no backbone. In addition, every senator who helped Arlen Specter show that someone with an "R" next to his name can get away with anything shares the blame for this. With the WH, a 10 seat Senate "majority", and a House majority, Republicans have failed to govern. There is no difference between the two parties. "Extraordinary circumstances" roughly translates to "Supreme Court nomination".

Make no mistake: This was capitulation, not compromise. Republicans deserve to lose every election from now to kingdom come.

RS, I'd like to agree, but you have to understand that, for many of us, this was the whole ball of wax. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad Bolton has been nominated, I'm glad that John Kerry is not leading the war on terror, and I'm glad that Priscilla Owen is now a circuit court of appeals judge. But the reason that many of us gave our time and money to the elections is the reform of the courts, especially the Supreme Court. In effect, this capitulation raises the standard for confirmation from 51 to an unconstitutional standard of 60. This will have a dramatic impact on the type of nominees we get, and, should we get good nominees, their likelihood of confirmation. I speak for many, but certainly not for all, when I say that I'd gladly give the Senate back to Tom Daschle if in exchange we could get our way with the courts.

SI. Don't give up. This is a good site for others who want to focus on the Senate. From what I've been reading Graham has heard a lot from the folks back home. I think he will back the constitutional option if the choice is backing the Dems or losing in a primary. If we can get to 58-59 seats like I think we will filibusters will be moot since any red state Dem would be afraid of his career ending and the Dems might give the slack so they don't fall below 40.

SI i think that is the stupidest thing you could possibly say, you are the very reason that we lose elections. Why in the name of god would you want Tom Daschle back....Why dont you just bring back carter and clinton so that we can have more ginsberg's on the bench....sheesh.

Anon, seven of the nine current Justices on the Court were appointed by Republicans, yet the Court is unfriendly to religious freedom, marriage, the unborn, states' rights (marijuana ruling), etc. We needed that win. Republicans lose elections because people don't see any difference between the parties thanks to things like this. The current Court would suggest that such people are right.

Having said this, I have thought about restarting it. Before doing so, though, I would have to be convinced that Republicans are serious about reforming the Supreme Court. The lack of leadership shown by Frist and the White House on the deal have me doubting that they are serious about doing so. Yes, the circuit court nominees are encouraging, but this was never about them. It was all about the high Court and the filibuster. You're welcome to try to convince me to start posting again, but to do so, you'll have to convince me that a Souter won't happen again, not that a Souter is better than a Stevens.
